چکیده

Cygnus X-1 and the gamma-ray transients GROJ0422+32 and GROJ1719-24 displayed similar spectral properties when they underwent transitions between the high and low gamma-ray (30 keV to few MeV) intensity states. When these sources were in the high γ-ray intensity state (γ2, for Cygnus X-1), their spectra featured two components: a Comptonized shape below 200-300 keV with a soft power-law tail (photon index >3) that extended to ∼1 MeV or beyond. When the sources were in the low-intensity state (γ0, for Cygnus X-1), the Comptonized spectral shape below 200 keV typically vanished and the entire spectrum from 30 keV to ∼1 MeV can be characterized by a single power law with a relatively harder photon index ∼2-2.7. Consequently the highand low-intensity gamma-ray spectra intersect, generally in the ∼400 keV ∼1 MeV range, in contrast to the spectral pivoting seen previously at lower (∼10 keV) energies. The presence of the power-law component in both the highand low-intensity gammaray spectra strongly suggests that the non-thermal process is likely to be at work in both the high and the low-intensity situations. We have suggested a possible scenario (Ling & Wheaton, 2003), by combining the ADAF model of Esin et al. (1998) with a separate jet region that produces the non-thermal gamma-ray emission, and which explains the state transitions. Such a scenario will be discussed in the context of the observational evidence, summarized above, from the database produced by EBOP, JPL’s BATSE earth occultation analysis system.

Modeling X/γ-ray Spectra of Galactic Black Holes and Seyferts

Recent high quality broad-band X-ray and gamma-ray observations of Galactic black holes by ASCA, Ginga, RXTE, and CGRO show that the spectra cannot be described by simple thermal Comptonization models (even including a fully relativistic treatment). Multi-component models accounting for Comptonization by thermal and non-thermal electrons, Compton reflection of X/γ-rays from cold matter, and emi...

Accretion flows around stellar mass black holes and neutron stars

In this review, I summarize the main X-ray/hard X-ray properties of the accretion flows around black holes and neutron stars based on recent broad-band spectral and timing observations performed by the BeppoSAX and Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer satellites. Emphasizing the spectral and timing similarities observed between black holes and neutron stars, I discuss on the most likely accretion geomet...

Gamma-rays from Galactic Black Hole Candidates with Stochastic Particle Acceleration

We consider stochastic particle acceleration in plasmas around stellar mass black holes to explain the emissions above 1 MeV from Galactic black hole candidates. We show that for certain parameter regimes, electrons can overcome Coulomb losses and be accelerated beyond the thermal distribution to form a new population, whose distribution is broad and usually not a power law; the peak energy of ...

Jets in Quasars, Microquasars and Gamma- Ray Bursts

Relativistic outflows are common in accreting and forming black holes. Despite the enormous differences in scale, stellar-mass black holes in X-ray binaries and supermassive black holes in Galactic Nuclei produce jets with analogous properties. In both are observed two types of relativistic outflows: 1) quasi-steady compact jets with flat-spectrum, and 2) episodic large-scale ejections with ste...

A Study of the Unidentified Gamma-ray Source 3eg J1828+0142

We present a study of the radio environment of the gamma-ray source 3EG J1828+0142. This source presents a very high variability index in its gamma emission and a steep high-energy spectral index Γ ∼ −2.8. Large-scale radio maps at different frequencies show the presence of a shell-type non-thermal structure when the diffuse emission from the Galactic disk is eliminated. At small scales, VLA ra...
